English is not the official language of the United States

I was shocked a few years ago to learn that the United States has no official language. I have been asking friends and family and they weren't aware of this fact either. It is time to make it the official language and we need to act on this so we can ensure that our road signs remain English among other things. I can't imagine my daughters growing up in this country where we have different languages in different areas and resulting signage and confusion. How will the schools handle these issues if we don't make one consistent language? It's alarming. Toward a United America http://www.us-english.org/inc/ U.S.ENGLISH, Inc. is the nation's oldest, largest citizens' action group dedicated to preserving the unifying role of the English language in the United States. Founded in 1983 by the late Senator S.I. Hayakawa, an immigrant himself, U.S. English now has 1.8 million members nationwide. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_in_the_United_States  The United States currently does not have an official language, but English is spoken by about 82% of the population as a native language. http://www.usconstitution.net/consttop_lang.html Many people are surprised to learn that the United States has no official language. As one of the major centers of commerce and trade, and a major English-speaking country, many assume that English is the country's official language. But despite efforts over the years, the United States has no official language. Push for 'official' English heats up http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-10-08-official-english_x.htm Rising concern over immigration has prompted a wave of cities and states this year to try to make English the official language.
