NECC is Coming Y'all. Here are some Atlanta travel tips.

As the NECC approaches, many people will be descending upon Atlanta. As a local, I wanted to send some ideas on where to go and what to do if you have any free time. 1) Visit Centennial Olympic Park - it's free and right next to the GWCC. http://www.centennialpark.com/ 2) Eat at the Hard Rock Cafe - walking distance at Peachtree and International. Rock out and have lunch. http://www.hardrock.com/locations/cafes3/cafes.aspx?LocationID=103&MenuID=15&MIBEnumID=3 3) Go to the top of the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel and see all of Atlanta. There is also a bar/restaurant at the top. It does cost $5.00 if you are not staying there, but is well worth it for a one time visit. We took friends from Switzerland and they loved it. http://www.starwoodhotels.com/westin/property/dining/attraction_detail.html?propertyID=1023&attractionId=1000046624 4) Looking for southern food? Check out barbeque at Fatt Matt's Rib Shack. http://www.fatmattsribshack.com/ 5) Visit Piedmont Park and eat at the Park Tavern. Drinks on the patio with live music on weekends. Watch the people play in the park and chomp on sweet potato fries. http://tavern.parktavern.com/ 6) Going to the clubs? Visit Midtown and stop by the many clubs. Shout and much more. Dress codes vary. http://atlanta.nightguide.com/nl1mi.htm http://www.hiwassee.us/midtown/content/outdoordining.shtml 7) Tour CNN Center. I love Headline News and this behind the scenes tour is a must for CNN lovers. http://www.cnn.com/tour/atlanta/ 8) Visit Virginia-Highland for some laid back dining and eclectic shops. Moe's & Joe's is a classic with Pabst Blue Ribbon on tap. Atkins Park Tavern is one of many wonderful watering holes. http://www.virginiahighland.com/ 9) Shop at the variety of malls - Phipps Plaza and Lenox Mall http://www.simon.com/mall/default.aspx?ID=207in Buckhead are favorites. 10) If you have time, drive up to Lake Lanier Islands http://www.lakelanierislands.com/content.asp?pid=2 or Stone Mountain Park http://www.stonemountainpark.com/. 11) Six Flags will feed your adventurous side. http://www.sixflags.com/overGeorgia/index.aspx 12) The new World of Coke http://www.woccatlanta.com/ has just opened up next to the Georgia Aquarium http://www.georgiaaquarium.org/. The NECC opening reception is at the Aquarium. It's amazing - bring your badge for free admission. 13) Go to the Ted and see the Braves game. It's a spectacle of delight. http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/atl/ballpark/index.jsp 14) Stop by the Varsity and order up greasy food just as decades of Ga. Tech students have done in the past. http://www.thevarsity.com/ 15) Looking for some punk rock and people watching? Visit Little Five Points for some funky shops, cool record stores and tasty Fellini's pizza. I just think of the movie Pretty in Pink and Molly Ringwald when I go there. http://www.l5p.com/ Local Tips: Order sweet tea somewhere. Anywhere. Don't bring up the Civil War. And if you hear anyone mention anything about it, don't say anything. Just don't. It still lives on here. (and I'm a northerner) If you hear "Bless Your Heart" - that's a cover for you're an idiot Don't ask for a Pepsi. If you are driving and hear traffic reports: The connector is 75/85 through downtown The perimeter is 285 that circles atlanta Spaghetti junction is where 85 meets 285 Southern Vocabulary http://www.netspace.org/~dmacks/pub/lists/south-dict.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_American_English These are just the tip of the iceberg.
